Bhubaneswar lad Rakesh Kumar Nayak emerged champion in the 1st Berhampur All-India Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament, garnering 7.5 points out of a possible nine at Sankalp Senior Secondary High School here today. Third seed Rakesh won six games and drew the remaining three to take home the top prize of Rs 30,000.
Second seed Ramnathan Balasubramaniam of Tamil Nadu, the only International Master in the fray, settled with the runner-up prize of Rs 20,000, while top seed and Fide Master Soumya Ranjan Mishra (Odisha) pocketed the third prize of Rs 15,000. A total 118 players participated in the five-day tournament, which was organized by Ganjam District Chess Association.
